This picture is from an October 9, 1995 New Yorker article that details how Newt Gingrich used a questionable fundraising operation and linguistic plan to create an army of mini-Newts ready to repeat his talking points. The article, by Connie Bruck, quotes Rick Santorum as one such follower - Senator Rick Santorum, of Pennsylvania, who was elected to the House in 1990 and Senate in 1994, told me, “I listened to those tapes all the time driving around in the car. They taught tactics you should use, basic philosophy, how to discuss the issues. I was a disciple.”
